This error appears when a page has no H2 headings. Here's what it means and how to structure the content correctly.
Google uses H2s to understand a page's secondary topics and how they relate to the main topic. Without them, the search engine has fewer signals to classify the content and may rank it lower than it deserves.
Without H2s, users can't scan the content or find their bearings within the page. That increases the effort needed to find what they're looking for and may cause them to leave before finding it.
A page without a heading structure signals carelessness. Google and users expect content to be organized. When it isn't, the site's perceived quality suffers.
If this error showed up in your audit, here are the steps to leave it behind.
Before adding H2s, read through the full content and identify the main thematic blocks. Each block covering a different topic is a candidate for its own H2.
With the blocks identified, write a clear and concise subheading for each one. The H2 should summarize what that section is about in just a few words, without exceeding 70 characters.
Sometimes subheadings are applied with visual styles instead of the correct HTML tag. Verify that the H2s are defined as such in the code and not just visually.
H2s should sit below the H1 and above the H3s. Make sure the heading structure follows a logical order and doesn't skip levels.
