Missing optional fields in structured data

This notice appears when a page's structured data is correct but doesn't include all the recommended optional fields. Here's what it means and how to complete them to get the most out of them.

What this error means

Structured data has two types of fields. On one hand the required ones, without which Google can't interpret the markup, and on the other the optional ones, which aren't essential but are recommended. This notice appears when the required fields are correctly defined but some of the optional ones are missing. Adding optional fields gives Google more information about the page's content. The more context the search engine has, the better it can present that content in search results and the more likely it is that more complete and attractive rich results will appear. It's not something that breaks anything. Structured data works even without optional fields. But completing them is an opportunity to improve the visibility and presentation of content in Google without needing to create new content or make complex technical changes. This notice usually appears when structured data is implemented with a basic template that includes only the minimum fields, without reviewing which additional fields could enrich the presentation of content in search results.

Why completing optional fields matters

Optional fields aren't required, but they do make the difference between a standard result and one that stands out. Adding them is one of those quick improvements that can have a visible impact in search results. Completing them gives Google more context and more tools to present your content in the best possible way.

Impact on visibility in Google

The more information you give Google about your content, the better it can classify it and relate it to relevant searches. Optional fields help the search engine build a more complete picture of what your page offers.

Impact on CTR

More complete and detailed rich results stand out more in search results. Adding optional fields such as ratings, images, or dates can make your result more visually attractive and increase the chances of the user clicking.

Loss of competitive advantage

Many sites implement only the minimum fields. Not completing the optional fields means staying at the same level as them when you could be presenting your content in a richer and more detailed way in the same search results.

How to fix it step by step

If this notice showed up in your audit, here are the steps to leave it behind.

Step 1

Identify which structured data have optional fields undefined

Ruk Audit shows you exactly which pages have optional fields pending completion and which ones they are. Review them before touching anything.

Step 2

Check Google's documentation for your content type

Each type of structured data has its own optional fields. Consult Google's Rich Results documentation to see which additional fields you can add to the type of markup you have implemented and which ones have the most impact on how the result is presented.

Step 3

Add the optional fields that provide the most value

With the documentation on hand, decide which optional fields make the most sense for your content and start with those that can visually improve your result on Google, such as ratings, images, or dates. Add them to the page's structured data markup, either by editing the code directly or using the SEO plugin you have configured.

Step 4

Validate the changes with Google's validator

Once the fields are added, use Google's Rich Results Test to check that the structured data is still correct and that the new fields have been correctly implemented.
